Fun Cheap Date Ideas in Kota Kinabalu

According to a survey which was done on mid-2017, it was found that a Malaysian couple needed an average of RM191.26 for a one-time date. The survey calculated cab rides, dinner or lunch for two at a diner, soft drinks and movie tickets.

We’re not sure about the “cost of time” part, but we do agree that the whole “dinner and a movie” routine can get pricey and most of us can’t do that every time we go on a date.

Don’t worry – keep on reading because this article will save you some money on your future dates. For starters, well, this article is completely FREE!

There are tons of inexpensive date ideas that won’t break the bank, and they are just as fun as an expensive, luxe night out.

So lovebirds, here is a list of activities around Kota Kinabalu (KK, in short) that will cost you almost nothing and are sure to pump up the romance.

Stroll Around Perdana Park

The main attraction of Perdana Park is none other than the musical water fountain which comes alive from 7:00pm to 9:00pm, Mondays to Thursdays.

This is a very nice place to breathe fresh clean air and relax with your partner.

In case you are hungry or wish to have a drink or dinner, there are a collection of food & beverage outlets that you can choose from.

Visit the Signal Hill Observatory Platform

Guys, you cannot miss this UFO-like observation pavilion!

Signal Hill, the highest point in the city, is one of the best places to get a good view of KK both day time and evening.

So go and spend a magical evening together with your bae here, appreciating the finest views of KK.

There is no fee, unless of course, you take a taxi/grab up there.

Hike as a Couple

Ahh, conquering hills together with your sweetheart. This is especially romantic if both of you are fitness enthusiasts.

If you’re a true KK-ian you would know that Bukit Padang hiking trail is one of the hills where people would go to hike because it is conveniently located near the city. Some of the stairs are constructed using car tyres. Interesting!

At the peak you’d be able to see a panoramic view of KK city and the suburbs as well as Manukan Island and Sapi Island.

The couple that hikes together, stays together. (Or you can just enjoy your time together when you meet up there later).

Pretend to be Tourists

Too often, couple wants to spend their time together traveling elsewhere, that they forget there are fascinating places just outside of their own front door.

Our task for you and your bae is to pretend you guys are tourists in KK, you know, like those people staring up at the buildings and taking selfies in front of everything. KK has lots of Instagram-worthy spots like in Gaya Street, Todak Waterfront, Street Art Graffiti Building, KK City Mosque – and the list goes on and on.

Just don’t spend too much in souvenir shops. Remember, your objective is to be as economical as possible!

Put on your weirdest outfit and accent, then ask the locals for directions. Well let’s just hope no one recognises you!

Volunteering as a Couple

No matter if it is your first year in a relationship with your new sweetheart, or your 50th wedding anniversary that is approaching, volunteering can be a wonderful adventure and make great memories together.

For example if both of you are animal lovers, SPCA Kota Kinabalu welcomes volunteers to clean, bath, rescue, transport and play with the rescued animals, usually cats and dogs.

So if you two are nearby, why don’t help make a difference? Who knows you might find a Rottweiler or a Poodle that you can adopt and give a happy home to.

We think museums are simply the best place you could have your date. Yes, you read that right. Museums. Ah… They feel like playgrounds.

Nothing sparks a sexy conversation like stopping in front of a piece of an antique and asking, “Hey Babe, what do you think this is?”

Plus, museums are surprisingly very affordable.  Admission fee are priced at only RM2.00 per adult at the Sabah Museum Kota Kinabalu.

Expenses : RM 2 x 2 persons = RM 4

In conclusion, though these activities add spice to your dates, ultimately as long as you both enjoy each other’s company it really doesn’t matter where you go and what you do.
