Sandakan dubbed the “Nature City” is the second biggest city in Sabah after Kota Kinabalu. In fact, Sandakan was the first capital city of British North Borneo (before it was known as Sabah). Its rich history is filled with stories of traders from Germany, Holland, Arab, India and China making their stop here. Nowadays this city is busy with the success of its palm oil industry and also tourists arrival. Sandakan is also host to a wide range of wildlife animals mostly living along the banks of the Kinabatangan River, the longest in the state.
Using Sukau as the starting point, visitors can go on river cruise to see elephants, rhinoceroses, saltwater crocodiles, monkeys and birds all in their natural habitat.
